HUMANKIND 2 TIPS AND TRICKS

Small decisions that decide the whole timeline

⚑ OPENING ECONOMY

Count Settlers, Not Units

Your first goal is a second settlement within 15 turns, not a garrison. Extra Food pays for everything downstream: more tiles, more Population, and the surplus that funds a Settler.

Keep the Capital Moving

Rotate garrisons out of the capital once a second city exists. A capital producing beats a unit that never fights.

🎭 CULTURE AFFINITY AND ERA BLENDING

Every culture in the cultures list carries affinities. A Military or Economic culture complements a Scientific or Diplomatic one, so strong empires alternate a "hard" and a "soft" culture rather than stacking one flavour.

βš”οΈ

Military + Scientific

A safe default. One culture holds the line, the other grows.

🀝

Diplomatic + Economic

Trade routes and Influence. Best when you cannot afford a long war.

β›ͺ

Religious + Military

Holy sites convert into Faith and stability. Strong in the Medieval era.

Avoid taking the same culture three times in a row. Repeating one removes the variety bonus from blending, and the unique unit stops feeling unique once every city has it.

πŸ”¬ SCIENCE-TO-CULTURE TIMING

Science is not only a score. It is the currency that unlocks the next era's culture choices, so timing of a spend matters more than size. Spend it on a culture you can field this era.

  • β€’ Unlock early, switch late. Have the Science ready before the era closes so you pick from a full list.
  • β€’ One unlock per era beyond the first. Each unlocked culture adds a domain, and every extra domain costs upkeep.
  • β€’ Boost the domain you will use. A Scientific culture is worth far more when a University or Library exists.
  • β€’ Do not dump Science late in an era. Science carries over, culture unlocks do not, so an unspent pile is wasted.

πŸ—ΊοΈ TERRITORY AND OVER-EXPANSION

Every new settlement pushes your frontier further from your capital, and a distant city reinforced across two or three borders is one you will lose. Over-expansion is the common way a strong Ancient start becomes a Modern collapse.

Use Influence, Not Walls

Influence claims tiles and shapes rival territory without the Production cost of fortifications. Using it early to lock a resource away from a neighbour beats saving.

Read Stability and Happiness

A city with unhappy citizens stops producing and can defect in multiplayer. Check the city panel before founding a seventh settlement.

Prune Before You Bleed

If an outlying city produces less than defending it costs, merge it, sell it, or raze it. A small empire with a strong core beats a wide one that cannot hold a line.

Keep the Core Compact

Your capital should reach the most exposed border in one move, two for ranged armies. If it cannot, the settlement is too far out: move forward or drop the claim.

πŸ—Ώ WONDER OPPORTUNITY COST

A wonder is a large production sink, and the bonuses in the wonders guide only matter if the tile, the era, and your build order line up. Before you start one: can you pay it without stalling growth, and can you skip a Settler for ten turns?

Instead of a Wonder What You Get Verdict
A Settler A new city, wider tax base Settle instead in Ancient and Classical
A Science building Faster era progress, earlier unlocks Build first, then the wonder
A Military unit Survival through an unwanted war Never skip defence for a wonder
A district chain Adjacency bonuses that stack Worth more in the Industrial era

πŸ™οΈ DISTRICTS AND CITY BUILDING

Check Adjacency First

A district next to a river, a grassland, and a road is worth two isolated districts. Check the yield preview before committing, and remember a Wonder can share it.

Cluster, Do Not Scatter

Commercial and industrial buildings stack their bonuses with a Market or Industrial district nearby. Scattering them throws that away.

🀝 DIPLOMACY AND MULTIPLAYER ETIQUETTE

Multiplayer turns resolve simultaneously, so you cannot react to another player until the round ends. Etiquette matters because the only warning you get is one you give.

  • β€’ Announce the plan. Tell the table when you are expanding, building a wonder, or turning to the Military. It prevents an accidental early strike and builds trust.
  • β€’ Keep to a first-turn agreement. If you agreed not to attack early, honour it. Renegotiating the turn you break it loses you the table.
  • β€’ Declare war with warning. Give one turn of notice unless the strike is a surprise. A declared war lets your opponent defend.
  • β€’ Do not spam offers. One meaningful proposal per player every few turns. Re-offering the same deal reads as trolling.
  • β€’ Trade early, not at the end. Long peaces and resource exchanges are worth negotiating in the Renaissance era, while everyone has room.

πŸ“‹ ERA PRIORITY CHEAT SHEET

Era First Priority Second Priority Avoid
Ancient Food, a second settlement Science toward the first swap Large army, early wonders
Classical Districts in every city An army of 5-6 units Settling three cities in a row
Medieval Science and Faith Influence for territory Ignoring the neighbours
Renaissance Trade routes, a National Wonder Opening borders Overbuilding in every city
Industrial Happiness and Food Industry near mines Letting Population starve
Modern A Modern Era wonder Cleaning up loose territory A war you cannot finish
